The Tournament Capital Of The World

Kamloops bills itself as the tournament capital of the world, so there's always something going on. But that's not the only reason to retire in Kamloops.

In the words of Loni, who took time to chat with me about why people want to retire in Kamloops, "Kamloops has big city amenities with a slow-paced life."

  • Art Gallery
  • Museum
  • Thompson Rivers University
  • Western Canada Theatre
  • Sun Peaks Ski Resort (the best ski hill next to Whistler)
  • Canada Games facilities
But I saw people strolling down the main streets at a pace you would never see in a larger center. In fact, the downtown core caters to retirees, building penthouses suitable for folk who are scaling down but who appreciate a great view and an easy walk to everything.

So who is coming to Kamloops? Housing prices compare favorably with those on the Lower Mainland, Kelowna and Alberta, (Many people are moving to Kelowna from Calgary.) so those are the main feeder areas.

But any snowbird would love the area. The summers are hot and dry. Those with arthritis find relief. If you love seasonal change, you can stay put and enjoy the crunchy snow and the -30 degree weather of winter. Or you can rent out your place to someone who wants to ski while you head south for another round of heat.

Kamloops Is A Recreational City

While you are in Kamloops, you can enjoy the activities the region offers:
  • Skiiing (cross-country and downhill)
  • Ski-doing
  • Skating (There are several arenas)
  • Hunting
  • Fishing (Kamloops is close to the Shuswap Lake area and is surrounded by other lakes)
  • Hiking
  • Biking
  • Golf (Kamloops and the surrounding area have many wonderful golf courses, including those that offer housing.)
  • Swimming (indoors and out)
  • Mountain climbing
  • Lawn bowling
  • Hockey (Kamloops is home to the WHL Blazers.)
And coming soon, a water park--great for visiting grandchildren!

Kamloops Offers A Variety of Housing Options

I've already mentioned the downtown penthouses. You can't all live there, but that doesn't matter because there are plenty of other options available from detached houses to apartments, condos, and age restricted retirement communities. There are even a few gated communities.

When the time comes, there is a full range of care options including assisted living and continuous care.

And on the topic of care, Kamloops is home to the regional hospital.
