Is Home Care In Your Retirement Future?

by T. Sydney Shinn

You have planned your retirement. Did you include a plan for home care?

Who will that someone be?

Today people commonly find themselves separated from extended family and friends. Adult children have moved away. Parents have retired, and in the process have established a new home at a resort community, have downsized to a less expensive state, or have moved to a warmer climate.

Regardless of where you live, there will come a time when those parents or grandparents or another loved one will require some form of home care -- assistance in their own home or in a family member's home.

Home care is not the "boogey man" that so many think it is. Using home care services does not mean that you are the “old man or woman down the street”.

For family members, home care means that you do not have to give up everything for the care of a loved one.

Home care can be a pleasant experience -- if you plan for it.

That's the key. You need to plan, preferably when planning for retirement.

One day retirement will include assistance for you in the home. As health sciences advance, people can expect to live longer. With that longevity comes the likelihood that you will need some type of home care during your lifetime.

Here are things to ask about home care. . .

  • What exactly is home care?
  • How much does it cost and can I afford it?
  • What financial assistance is available?
  • What professional assistance such as nursing is required?
  • What if medical equipment is required?
  • What are the legal issues?
In under 20 years, more than 65 million seniors will require some sort of health care assistance. The goal is to ensure that those who can stay in their homes do so. Continuing to live in one's own home is the best health care there is.

There are many health care solutions available to you and your loved one. Learn all you can now. Plan now. Then enjoy those golden years with peace of mind.
